On the same night Pompeii stood still, Herculaneum was buried as well. Because of mud and volcanic debris, it found itself covered in a 10 metres thick layer.
This blanket made it difficult to bring back to light the small town, but it also preserved some fabric, food and a collection of papyrus to be admired.
